The tasting of the week continues to discover Piacenza wines with one of the most characteristic and historical wines of the province of Piacenza: Gutturnio Superiore.
Gutturnio is one of the first ten Italian wines to have obtained the denomination of controlled origin (DOC) in 1967.
It is produced in the province of Piacenza and is the most important and well-known of Piacenza wines.
Our Sommelier Alessandro Pigliucci tasted for us Gutturnio Superiore 2017 from the “Il Poggiarello” winery: La Barbona.
La Barbona bears the inscription Ventanni on the label in memory of the first harvest in 1997 that gave birth to the wine “La Barbona”.
The etymology of the name Barbona chosen by the winery derives from the vines that make up the assembly, namely Barbera 55% and Croatina 45% here called Bonarda. The vineyards, more than fifty years old, guarantee low yields and good quality, the result of the numerous harvests they have sustained.

The main features
The fermentation of Gutturnio Superiore takes place with selected yeasts and the refinement is carried out in lightly toasted Allier barriques, first and second passage for 14 months.
At sight: a beautiful ruby red color, swirls consistently in the glass, suggesting the intense structure and the numerous aromas that open after a few minutes of oxygenation.
The hardness of Barbera is balanced by Bonarda and, thanks to the refinement in the barriques, the tertiary scents become evident.
Intense aromas of marasca cherry jam, violet and cinnamon are enriched by nuances of coffee, cocoa and tobacco that come out clearly from the glass.
How to combine it?
This red wine is characterized by a strong tannin and a good softness that envelops the palate, making it a gastronomic wine suitable for numerous preparations capable of sustaining its long persistence.
A mature cheese, a platter of Piacenza cold cuts, a donkey stew or a La picula ‘d caval (horse stew) will be perfect to combine with this twentieth vintage of Barbona today Gutturnio Superiore.
Now you just have to try it! Buy it now on our Taste Piacenza online shop and tell us yours!
